Resident Assistant Position

Resident Assistants (RAs) are student staff who live in each hall and provide support to residential students. RAs are assigned to a specific community on a specific staff. Each RA reports directly to their Community Director (CD). At USD, the RA staffs range in size from 8-16. The RA staff’s main objective is to foster a sense of community in each hall.  RAs are responsible for enforcing community standards, upholding health and safety expectations, supporting the programmatic efforts of the area, and being a general resource for their residents.  Additional details and job responsibilities can be reviewed in the RA Position Description

Benefits

The RA position fosters many leadership skills, including organization, communication, and crisis management.  RAs receive a scholarship that covers the cost of their room and a meal plan.  There are several meal plan options for RAs, which are selected during the summer prior to the term of employment.   

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be a full-time student
  • Have a class standing of “Second Year” or above for the academic year they would serve. In other words, applicants must have at least one year experience as a USD student. 
  • NOTE: Residential Life is currently collecting applications from graduate and law students, but will only conduct interviews if vacancies become available for those populations.
  • Have a 2.75 cumulative GPA
  • Be in good disciplinary standing. 
  • NOT serve simultaneously as the Associated Students President or a Scholastic Assistant.
  • NOT miss summer training for Pre-Orientation Leadership positions.

Timeline

  • November 2017: Study Abroad Process
    • Students studying abroad in Spring 2018 will receive an email about this process.
  • January & February 2018: RA Application opens and RA Information Sessions hosted
  • February 25, 2018: RA Application Deadline
  • March 8, 2018 & March 9, 2018: Individual Interviews
  • March 10, 2018: Invitation for Group Process sent
  • March 16, 2018 & March 17, 2018: Group Process
  • March 23, 2018: Decision letters sent

  • Attend an information session.  It is required for each RA applicant to attend one session.  Below are the dates of the Information Sessions:

      • Tuesday, February 13, 2017 – UC 128 @ 12:30pm
      • Tuesday, February 13, 2018 – Maher 205 @ 8:30pm
      • Wednesday, February 14, 2017 – Manchester 1st Floor Board Room @ 7:30pm
      • Wednesday, February 14, 2018 – Missions Crossroads @ 9pm
      • Thursday, February 15, 2018 – Camino Lounge @ 9pm
      • Tuesday, February 20, 2018 – Palomar Multipurpose Room @ 8:30pm
      • Wednesday, February 21, 2018 –UC 103AB @ 7pm
      • Thursday, February 22, 2018 – KIPJ Room F @ 1pm
      • Monday, February 26, 2018 – Missions Crossroads @ 8pm
  • Fill out an Application by Sunday, February 25, 2017.
  • Sign up for an Individual Interview time.  These interviews will take place on:
    • Thursday, March 8, 2018 from 12pm to 5pm
    • Friday, March 9, 2018 from 9am to 1pm
  • Complete Reference Form by Sunday, February 25, 2018.
    • Note: Reference cannot be from an RA, Community Director, or Assistant Community Director.
  • Those selected to participate in the Group Process will be notified by Saturday, March 10, 2018. The group processes will take place on:
    • Friday, March 16, 2018 from 1:45pm to 4:30pm
    • Saturday, March 17, 2018 from 9:45am to 12:30pm
  • Decision letters will be sent to your USD email address on Friday, March 23, 2018.
