New Faculty FAQ’s

Who attends New Faculty Orientation?
All tenure line faculty, diversity postdoctoral scholars, and full time benefits based faculty members on multiple (3+) year contracts are eligible to attend New Faculty Orientation (NFO) if they are new to the university. The Provost’s office pays for associated costs for attendance for eligible tenure line and diversity postdoctoral scholars; academic units pay for eligible faculty on multiple year contracts to attend NFO. All faculty members, regardless of new or revised contract terms, are eligible to attend NFO one time only. Faculty members are eligible attend the 4-day August session, followed by the associated ongoing NFO sessions, during the academic year closest to the initial contract start date.

Must I attend all the sessions?
Yes, faculty are expected to attend all four sessions in full. Faculty who have already selected their benefits coverage may leave, when released, during the final portion of the HR session.

Am I eligible to receive a stipend for orientation?
Stipends will be paid to faculty who are not on contract in August. Eligible faculty will receive $500 for each day you attend in full. After the final orientation session, expect an email with instructions to pick up your check.

How do I claim reimbursement for my relocation costs?
Details regarding relocation are available on the Provost's Office website. Further questions may be directed to Nadeaja Shaheed in the Provost's Office.

What should I wear to orientation?
Business casual attire is encouraged. On Tuesday, August 27, there will be an off-campus, community engagement session—comfortable footwear is recommended!

What are my parking options?
A valid USD parking permit must be displayed Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Full-time faculty are eligible to purchase an annual parking pass and we recommend you do so ahead of orientation. Alternatively, metered parking is available in select locations.
