University Award and Professorships

University Professors are those who have demonstrated outstanding scholarly achievements in teaching and research supporting the mission and goals of USD.

  • Nominations/applications due to Deans: November 1, 2019, or an earlier date as set by the academic unit
  • Recommendations from the Deans due to University Professorship Oversight Committee: November 29, 2019
  • Ratification by University Professorship Oversight Committee due by: January 15, 2020
  • Announcements by Provost: Last week of January 2020

Five professorships are awarded in total: two for the College of Arts and Sciences, one for the School of Business, one for the School of Law, and one for the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES), or the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering (SMSE), or from either the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science (SON) (2/3) or the Kroc School (1/3).

Over a nine-year period SOLES and SMSE would each have three awards, SON would have two awards and Kroc would have one award.  

In 2018-2019, SON has one; in 2019-2020, SMSE has one; in 2020-2021 SOLES has one, and in 2021-2022 Kroc has its first award.

$20,000 per professorship

For an internal professorship, the funds may be used flexibly for course reduction, salary supplement, travel, project needs or other appropriate purpose; for course reductions, the cost to buy out a course is determined by the dean (depending on cost of replacement, among other factors). Benefits charged at 9.68% to the professorship account for course reductions and/or stipends.

  • This one-year professorship is based on outstanding contributions at USD in teaching and research
  • Tenure required
  • There must be a seven-year hiatus between this award and a prior University Professorship
