Congratulating the Class of 2017

May 18, 2017

Dear USD Campus Community:

As we near the end of our spring semester, my wife Mary and I extend our very best to our forthcoming graduates as they prepare to join our Torero alumni in engaging the world in profound and meaningful ways. Thanks to the hard work of our students and the tireless support and guidance from our distinguished faculty, our graduates are equipped to confront humanity’s urgent challenges as ethical leaders and compassionate citizens.

The spring semester presented our entire campus community with many opportunities to engage in important conversations about the future of our country and our commitment to our Culture of Care. We shared perspectives about social justice and the dignity of every person, particularly those who are marginalized and most vulnerable. Together, we celebrated our diversity and reflected upon many different perspectives beyond our own.

When you look across the country at the turmoil in government, on college campuses and in our neighborhoods, it is a tribute to our campus community to witness the many thoughtful and respectful ways in which you engaged in difficult conversations with a spirit of solidarity and love.

Our students, faculty and staff come from all over the world, and our spring semester was a vivid reflection of our deeply compassionate, diverse and inclusive learning community. My family and I are humbled to be a part of a resilient and innovative campus community that demonstrates these characteristics each and every day in the classroom, in our local communities and around the world.

Congratulations to our graduates, and I wish all of our students, faculty, staff and families a joyful and productive summer. I look forward to seeing many of you at our commencement ceremonies and at our community picnic on May 31!
