University of San Diego

Dear USD Community,

It is my pleasure to announce that Rick P. Virgin has accepted my offer to serve as the Vice President of University Advancement at the University of San Diego, effective August 1, 2018.

Mr. Virgin’s most recent leadership position was as Vice President of University Relations at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, where he served as the chief fundraiser and philanthropic strategist. He also led parent and alumni relations, strategic communications, marketing and special events. Working closely with Creighton’s government relations team, Rick identified and coordinated advocacy on legislative and regulatory issues, including funding from government sources. He has a solid reputation for creating high-performing teams, establishing strong relationships with boards and senior leadership, and coaching and mentoring staff at all levels.

He has more than 20 years of development leadership experience spearheading successful fundraising campaigns and establishing a significant record of accomplishment securing major and transformational gifts at Creighton University, George Mason University and The George Washington University. As a member of Hispanics in Philanthropy and Partnership 4 Kids, Mr. Virgin also brings with him a commitment to community service.

Rick and his wife, Kathleen, are committed Roman Catholics and parents of 9-year-old daughter Kennedy.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Search Committee, the university attracted dozens of applicants from across the country and produced three outstanding finalists. I am deeply grateful to the members of the committee, co-chaired by Provost and Vice President Gail F. Baker and Vice President Ky Snyder, for their time, dedication and commitment to conducting an open and inclusive search process.

Finally, I wish to thank Dr. Tim O’Malley for his leadership and dedicated service as Vice President for University Relations since 2006. He has served with distinction during this period and has provided me with sound counsel and advice throughout Leading Change: The Campaign for USD. I am grateful that he will continue to serve at USD during the summer months to assist with this important transition.

Please join me in welcoming Mr. Rick P. Virgin to the USD community when he arrives in August.

Sincerely,

James T. Harris III, D.Ed.
