James Waring will be honored at Alumni Honors by the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies. Jim has more than 25 years of experience in law, real estate investment, land use, economic development and business finance. However, it is his dedication to community development that distinguishes him as an alumnus from the School of Peace Studies. Throughout his career, he has been deeply committed to serving the community, and has dedicated his time and expertise to various civic, environmental and charitable causes.
In 2007, Jim co-founded and became Chairman of CleanTech San Diego, a non-profit trade organization group focused on accelerating San Diego’s position as a world leader in the clean technology economy. The organization aims to foster the growth of San Diego companies in developing green and sustainable technologies and products. He also serves on the San Diego Mayor’s Housing Commission and was recently appointed to the California Transportation Commission by Governor Jerry Brown. Previously, Jim served on the California Center for Sustainable Energy Board of Directors, Francis Parker Board of Trustees, River Network Board of Directors, San Diego Natural History Museum Board of Directors, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Director’s Cabinet. Until recently, he also served on the inaugural advisory board for the School of Peace Studies.
Jim has had a positive impact on multiple organizations through his service. His entrepreneurial spirit and dedication is what led him to create CleanTech, which is beginning to make a positive impact on the city of San Diego. He sees CleanTech as a way of creating companies and jobs that support sustainable energy and resources – something that will be increasingly necessary as San Diego’s resources decrease and the population increases. By creating CleanTech, Jim is helping San Diego become a world leader in green business development and technology adoption.
Jim is dedicated to living by ethical principles and values as demonstrated by his commitment to public service. He has repeatedly expressed admiration and inspiration for people who sacrifice their own comfort and economic gain to help the less fortunate.
“Always be truthful in what you say.
Wherever possible, recognize the achievements of the team effort involved in any accomplishment.”
