Behind the Scenes of the Women PeaceMakers Program

What is it like to interview, every day for two months, a Woman PeaceMaker from a country you've never been to? How do you listen and relate to someone who has been through brutal experiences in conflict, but who chooses to build peace instead of festering in hatred? How do you build trust so she will answer your questions? How do you then write her story?
Join peace writers and the staff of the IPJ's Women PeaceMakers program, which documents the stories and strategies of women leaders from around the world, for an intimate evening that will answer these questions.
Sue Diaz, a local published author, was a peace writer this past fall and worked with human rights defender Rehana Hashmi of Pakistan.
Bianca Morales-Egan now works for San Diego-based Project Concern International. She was the peace writer for Olenka Ochoa of Peru in 2008.
Emiko Noma was a two-time peace writer in 2005 and 2006 for peacemakers from Uganda and Serbia, and since then has guided the documentation process in the program and works closely with the peace writers every fall as the IPJ's editor.
Jennifer Freeman, senior program officer, now directs the Women PeaceMakers program. She first served the program as a peace writer in 2008 and 2009 — for Sylvia Maunga Mbanga of the DRC and Zeinab Mohammed Blandia of Sudan. This fall's program will be her fifth year of ensuring women's peacebuilding stories are documented and acknowledged.
Jenni Prisk of Voices of Women, a Women PeaceMakers Advisory Committee member who was recently featured in U-T San Diego, will moderate the event.
A reception will follow the panel.
