Big Sur

Big Sur

Backpack the Ventana Wilderness in Big Sur and drive along the 101 between Santa Barbara and Carmel (one of the top drives in the country). This trip offers spectacular scenery along arguably the most beautiful stretch of the California coast. We will begin at Outdoor Adventures where we will review our itinerary, gear and food before heading north towards Big Sur. We will travel by van up highway 101 where we will load up our backpacks for four days of backpacking. After making our way back to Highway 101 we will travel south to Malibu Creek for a stopover before returning to campus.

This trip is designed to provide you with many opportunities for growth and development. You will have the chance to push yourself physically and mentally while living and traveling with a small group of peers. Activities will include backpacking, camping, and even surfing.

No previous experience is required. We will make the most of our time in the wilderness and some days will be more challenging than others. Be prepared to carry a 35 to 50 pound backpack and hike about 5 miles per day (20 miles round-trip) to Sikes hot springs in the Ventana Wilderness. The hike starts at 400ft elevation and hits a maximum of 1500 ft with lots of elevation gain and loss along the way.

Don’t take Henry’s word for it, find out for yourself! Hiking the western section of the Pine Ridge Trail will offer streamside and redwood-shaded backcountry camps to enjoy. Sikes hot springs will become a favorite resting spot. Keep an eye out for Elephant Seals on the beaches below route 101 and the rare California Condor soaring above. With a day exploring Malibu, this trip offers a spectacular sampling of the best of coastal California!
