Dr. Patricia Roth, Professor, Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, received her B.S. in Nursing from Mary Manse College, a Master of Science in Adult Health Nursing from the University of Arizona, and Doctor of Education degree with an emphasis in higher education administration from the University of Southern California. She has taught in the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs of the School of Nursing with an emphasis on health care of underserved populations, health care ethics, aging families and the experience of chronic illness.

Roth’s research has focused on the transitions experienced by older persons and their families as they age and encounter the challenges of chronic illness, loss and environmental change.. Her most recent emphasis has been on ethical conflict and decision-making in the care of persons with dementia and end-of-life issues. Dr. Roth has published in collaboration with her research colleagues in such journals as the Journal of Advanced Nursing, Journal of Professional Nursing, Advanced Practice Nursing Quarterly, Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, Nursing Research and the Journal of Long Term Care Administration. She served as a co-investigator on an NIH grant investigating the effect of Cognitive Stimulation Training in Alzheimer’s Families, published in Nursing Research under the direction of Dr. Mary Quayhagen.

Among her professional activities, Dr. Roth has served as an evaluator for the Commission for the Collegiate Education for Nursing, an external evaluator for the UCSD School of Medicine Academic Geriatric Resource Center, and an external evaluator to the Grossmont Community College and National University GrantProyjecto Adelante: Recruitment of Hispanic Nurses initiative. She is a reviewer for the Journal of Professional Nursing and the Journal of Family Nursing.

In conjunction with her research and clinical focus, Dr. Roth has been involved in the San Diego health care community. She has served as a member of the Board of Directors and the Medical Advisory Committee of the Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers, the Internal Review Board of San Diego Hospice, the Ethics Committee of Sharp Memorial Hospital, and the Community Advisory Board of the Veteran’s Administration Geriatric Psychiatry Department. Dr. Roth has recently served on several panels for the San Diego Coalition to Improve Care at the End of Life.
