Karen A. Macauley, PhD, DNP, FNP-BC, GNP-BC, Associate Professor and Director of Nurse Practitioner and Health Care Informatics Programs, directs the Doctor of Nursing Practice, Nurse Practitioner, and Health Care Informatics programs at USD’s Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science (SON). She received her RN from Southwestern Community College in 1980, BS from San Diego State University in 1988, MSN/FNP in 1995, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in 2010 and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing in 2013 from the University of San Diego. She is an accomplished practicing nurse practitioner caring for families and older adults and has served as a preceptor for more than 45 USD NP students over the past 22 years.

Dr. Macauley served as the school’s first Simulation Center and Innovative Learning director and was responsible for the development of the simulation and standardized patient programs. She was influential in the design, planning, fundraising, and construction of the Beyster Institute of Nursing Research, Advanced Practice, and Simulation, opening September 2, 2015 ranking within the top 40 nursing schools by U.S. News & World Report.

She has an extensive background in advanced practice nursing, nursing education, competency tool development, and technology, with specific training and expertise in curricular development and integration of simulation and standardized patient methodologies into health care education. Dr. Macauley has provided extensive development opportunities for faculty and conducted research on innovative teaching and competency assessment methods to span across the pre-licensure and advanced practice nursing curriculums. She has presented nationally and internationally on how to integrate simulation and standardized patient methodologies into nursing and develop milestones and Entrustable Professional Activities competencies specifically for NPs.

As a practice scholar, prepared with both a DNP and PhD in Nursing, she has participated in funded research and applied the foundations of translational science, program development and evaluation while implementing sustainable evidenced-based practice projects in multiple primary and occupational clinical sites. She also lobbied for and participated in USD’s campus wide smoke and tobacco-free initiative by serving as the SON’s liaison in regards to occupational smoking related illnesses.

Because of her dedication to the NP role and accomplishments as an NP educator, she has received the California Association of Nurse Practitioner’s NP Distinction Award for 2016 and was nominated for USD’s Woman of Impact Award in 2014.
