USD History Professor Awarded IAS Fellowship

University of San Diego professor of history, Thomas Barton, PhD, has been awarded a prestigious fellowship with the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) for the coming academic year.

Barton joins a distinguished list of past and present IAS scholars that includes Nobel Laureates, MacArthur fellows, Pulitzer Prize winners and more.

Barton teaches and studies medieval history, and has been at USD since 2007. His work encompasses centuries of the premodern world, examining culture from the fourth century through the 1500s. The IAS fellowship will provide funding in support of his research into the Catholic world under the Spanish and Portuguese empires from 1300 to 1600.

This September, Barton will relocate to the IAS campus in Princeton, New Jersey, where he’ll begin work on a book.

"Getting a membership at the Institute for Advanced Study is a major milestone in my career, and I’m so thrilled to be relocating to its campus for the coming academic year, which has featured innumerable eminent scholars, from Einstein, Oppenheimer, and Bohr to Arendt, Kennan, and Geertz,” Barton said. “The time away from teaching and service, combined with the camaraderie and support of the medieval and early modern research groups and colleagues at the university, will help me to make progress on my book project.”
