Headshot of Imelda Garcia
begin quoteSpecifically in the high school setting, I try to emphasize possibilities and remind women of their capabilities when others may deter them.

In observance of International Women's Day, Imelda Garcia emphasizes that working toward gender equity is an everyday practice. Imelda is a student in the MA in School Counseling program.

Why is it important for SOLES to value the role of women in your degree program?

I think it is vital we value the role of women because women have and continue to make impactful contributions in multiple fields, and with SOLES reflecting many fields, it's important for this school to shed light on the role of women.

How do you lift up the women in your life/community?

In my community, I try to uplift women by promoting and encouraging self-confidence and celebrating each other's successes. Specifically in the high school setting, I try to emphasize possibilities and remind women of their capabilities when others may deter them.

How do you choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequity?

I believe this is an everyday challenge, and I always try to be direct and either call out or question what the intention or thought process is. I think as we continue to move forward in our society, it's important now more than ever to continue pushing against gender bias in any setting.

What do you hope is accomplished through celebrating International Women's Day?

I hope that by celebrating International Women's Day, we are able to expand this further and recognize more of women's contributions.
