International Women's Day: Student Spotlight with Miso Jang

Headshot of Miso Jang
begin quoteOne of my favorite quotes about self-love as a woman is best said by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in which she shares about women is, 'It is a radical act and mini protest to love yourself.'

In celebration of International Women's Day, Miso Jang reminds us that today is as much about uplifting the women in our lives as it is about women making internal investments in the self. Miso is a student in the MA in Higher Education Leadership program with a Restorative Justice Certficate as well as a Graduate Assistant in the United Front Multicultural Commons.

Why is it important for SOLES to value the role of women in your degree program?

It is important for SOLES to value the role of women in the MA Higher Education Leadership and in the Student Affairs profession to empower and support women going into the field of higher education to confidently be leaders wherever they go.

How do you lift up the women in your life/community?

I uplift women in my life and community by showing gratitude and appreciation to them. In addition, I uplift the voices of WOC on my social media and educate myself on the amazing things women around the world are doing. I also try my best to show up authentically in spaces to empower others around me.

How do you choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequity?

I challenge bias and inequities by educating myself and doing the internal work. I challenge societal gendered norms by radicalizing the way I approach self-care and self-love. One of my favorite quotes about self-love as a woman is best said by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in which she shares about women is, "It is a radical act and mini protest to love yourself." In a more technical capacity, I also educate others on campus through facilitating various Rainbow Educators workshops and presentations such as Implicit Bias, microaggressions, identity & intersectionality.

What do you hope is accomplished through celebrating International Women's Day?

I hope that women, especially women of color, are celebrated and uplifted throughout the year and that International Women's Day reminds us to show gratitude and appreciation to the women in our lives.
