Course Description: This course provides an introduction to group dynamics, group theories and group work. Group counseling approaches and models, issues of group leadership, styles of leadership, and group facilitation skills will be addressed. Consideration is also given to group counseling goals, phases of group development, and research on group dynamics and group counseling. The course is organized into a seminar for an intensive examination of the theory and practice of group work and group counseling and a laboratory for experiential learning related to group process. Additionally, students will get the unique opportunity to work the Bahamas Ministry of Health to help design group curriculum for parent and family groups. This is important as graduates of this program will frequently be required to create a curriculum specifically designed to target the needs of their agency’s population.

Course Description: This course encompasses a cross-cultural approach for developing a deep understanding of human cognition and learning with an emphasis on implications for educators and educational researchers. While in Tokyo, students will engage in a variety of learning activities such as Japanese lesson study, action research forum and elementary/middle school visits. Students will have first-hand experiences to learn about Japanese teaching methods/philosophy focused on the social and personal development of children. Students will also have a variety of opportunities to interact with Japanese K-12 teachers, students and university students at Waseda University. The program cost includes hotel stay in the heart of Tokyo (Shinjyuku district), daily buffet breakfast, Tokyo metropolitan train pass and a half day city tour with plenty of free time to explore the city on your own.

Course Description: This course provides candidates with an opportunity to learn more about local and global perspectives on educating diverse learners. We will emphasize the cultural and linguistic diversity of Black South Africa and the challenges of educating this broad group of students including a strong emphasis on the history of South African R-12 schooling with specific attention to racial stratification and segregation. We will begin to answer the question: How do you educate all children equally in multiracial, multicultural, multilingual societies? A comparative overview of American and South African education systems and cultural norms using readings, lectures, digital media, critical reflections, discussions, and experiential activities such as working with cultural liaisons. Students will be asked to complete a ChangeMaker project in collaboration with South African educators from universities and schools in Johannesburg. Additionally, students will attend and present at the DISES conference in Cape Town and local community event in California.

Course Description: The focus of this course is on comparative international education systems in elementary and secondary education.  This course will allow participants to research and analyze other countries educational systems, socio-cultural factors and language context of various nations.  This will better prepare SOLES participants as they embark and participate in SOLES-Global international educational programs. Particular attention will be placed on basic comparisons between educational systems in the US and UK. Visitations to local primary and secondary schools where a culturally and linguistically diverse students will part of the class, as well as having guest speakers from St. Clare’s and Oxford University will be included in course.

Course Description: The nonprofit sector is vital to the economic, political, and cultural fabric of Western societies. Outside of the United States, the nonprofit sector is often referred to as the “third sector,” the “independent sector,” or “civil society.” An underlying assumption of these terms is that the sector is part of an “institutional division of labor” shared with the government and business sector (DiMaggio & Anheier, 1990). Nonprofits are understood to specialize in services that government and corporations are either unwilling or unable to provide.

What is puzzling from a practical and theoretical perspective is the great variation of nonprofit sectors across the world. For example, why is the sector in Germany much more closely tied to the government than in the United States?

This course will allow students to explore a comparative perspective of the sector and its relations to government and corporate sectors. Specifically, this course will examine the role of the nonprofit sector in different political and economic contexts with a comparative focus on the European and American contexts.

Course Description: This intensive summer course is an opportunity for participants to be exposed first-hand to a unique organizational model of participatory leadership, management, employee ownership and decision making by attending lectures and visiting sites at the Mondragón Corporación Cooperativa (“Mondragón”) in Mondragón, Spain. Students will become acquainted with Mondragón’s unique leadership, management, educational, training, financial and human resources systems, as well as its globalization initiatives. Participants will also learn the core values that support Mondragón, which are based on a balance between organizational and individual needs, the dignity of the person and of work, solidarity with each other and the community, and economic and social justice. Finally, participants will become acquainted with the institutionalized policies, processes and practices that support Mondragón’s economic and social success.

Course: EDUC 579i, Changemakers in K-12 Education: National & International

Course Description: This course builds on knowledge and skills on Changemaking that candidates have acquired through a variety of courses in the learning and teaching department. This course will explore Changemaking in K-12 in the context of Spain’s educational system. Candidates will examine the Changemaker framework in light of the development of empathy, problem-solving, leadership and collaboration to achieve inclusion and social change in the classroom. The course will use empathy as the basis for actions that teachers can take to change mindset, systems, culture and curriculum in schools. Candidates will visit a traditional elementary school and a special education school in Madrid and compare to a Changemaker schools. They will learn how administrators, teachers, and parents serve and integrate immigrant linguistically diverse students and students with disabilities through inclusive practices. Candidates will get familiar with student-centered, cooperative approaches and design thinking-based methodological approaches that are used in Changemaker schools.  They will explore approaches used to provide children equal access to the curriculum and skills for the 21st century. Candidates will be guided by and co-create lessons with Spanish teachers that will involve children in thinking as Changemakers and transform their world.

Course Description: This course serves as a foundation course for the Teaching, Learning and Leadership specialization. It takes as its point of departure the idea that educational outcomes are socially constructed. Using a sociological lens, structural, cultural and agentive explanations for the racialized, class-based and gendered school experiences of US students will be examined. Moving from the macro to the micro level, students will examine schools as organizations embedded in broader socio-cultural and historical context.
