Kroc School Launches Redesigned Website to Attract and Serve Even More Changemakers

Kroc School website in various viewports

The University of San Diego’s Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies (Kroc School) has a powerful new asset in the promotion of peace, justice, and social innovation – a redesigned website which launched on Wednesday, Feb. 17.

For the Kroc School, which offers top-ranked graduate programs in Peace and Justice, Social Innovation, and Conflict Management and Resolution, the website is a critical tool for showing how the Kroc School is helping to solve humanity’s urgent challenges through innovative teaching, research and ideas. Since its launch as the first stand-alone school of peace studies in the United States in 2007, more than 300 students have come to the Kroc School from six continents. For nearly all of them, the website played a central role in educating them about the myriad opportunities available there for personal and professional growth.

“The primary audience for our redesigned website is the prospective student,” said Krista Kokjohn-Poehler, the Kroc School’s Assistant Dean of Marketing and Advancement. “We surveyed current students and alumni, then pored over every detail on every page in order to create an engaging experience that informs and inspires prospective students with the right content at the right time. The world desperately needs trained changemakers, so we felt that it was imperative to show them that the Kroc School is an extraordinary place to gain the skills, knowledge, and experience to advance their careers as an agent of positive change.”

The engaging experience Kokjohn-Poehler refers to manifests on the website in several ways. In particular, the research from faculty and the Kroc School’s Institute for Peace and Justice (Kroc IPJ) appear front and center on several pages, giving immediate access to the Kroc School’s collective thought leadership which is informing policy and practice globally in the peacebuilding, social innovation, and conflict resolution fields.

Compared to the previous iteration of the website, video, imagery, and stories from students and alumni are also much more prominently featured. Justin Prugh, the Kroc School’s Communications and Marketing Manager, and Kevin Dobyns, the Kroc School’s Marketing Coordinator, selected pieces from more than three years’ worth of content to represent what it’s like to be a Kroc School student and pursue a career of purpose.

“We’re fortunate at the Kroc School to have so many students and alumni who are creating lasting impact through their actions. From capturing the experiential learning that is integral to a Kroc School education, to showcasing alumni out in the field, we drew heavily on images and videos that students and alumni have shared with us.” Prugh said.

As part of the redesign, the Kroc IPJ also benefits from a new look to its pages. For Executive Director Andrew Blum and his team, the redesign was an opportunity to highlight the research they’re co-creating with several of the world’s most renowned peacebuilding leaders and organizations to end cycles of violence.

The Kroc School is the first school at the University of San Diego to adopt the university’s newest website infrastructure, which is in keeping with the Kroc School’s commitment to innovation and experimentation as a source of evolution and growth.

“The timing of the launch is perfect,” said Hilary Beggs, the Kroc School’s Assistant Director of Recruitment and Admissions. “As we prepare to accept the next cohort of students for Fall 2021, we’re delighted to make it even easier for applicants to make a confident decision about where to pursue a master’s degree and to envision the outstanding opportunities that await them as Kroc School students.”
