The Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies is greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. We celebrate Justice Ginsburg’s legacy as a trailblazer for gender equality and the impact of her advocacy on the legal recognition of women’s rights.

At a time when our society is divided and social cohesion is severely weakened, we recall her belief in the importance of “listening to people with views other than one’s own” in order to protect the rule of law, and in interpreting the Constitution to protect the rights of all people, including those that society neglects and marginalizes.

We take Justice Ginsburg’s passing as a call for all of us to recommit to take actions, personally and professionally, to promote equality, justice and peace. And reflecting on Justice Ginsburg’s legacy, we affirm the inextricable link between women’s rights and meaningful, positive peace, here in the U.S., and around the world.
