The Social Innovation Foodfest Returns to USD

There's a story behind that cookie, that cup of coffee, too

Students at Social Enterprise Food Fest

Coffee and cookies — a power duo in its own right, however, if your cup of joe helps propel job training and your sweet treat is reducing food waste in San Diego than that truly is a winning combination. For the second year in a row, the Center for Peace and Commerce is hosting its Social Innovation Foodfest and this one promises to be just as fulfilling as the first. 

On Thursday, October 10, from noon-2 p.m. in the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice’s Garden of the Sky, a collection of local partners, student ventures and USD initiatives around food will come together. 

A whopping one-third of the food produced globally is lost or wasted, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization. When you untangle this statistic and factor in the resources behind food waste, among those being water and labor, the true cost of this issue is much larger than the estimated 1.3 billion tonnes per year of food. And all this while almost one billion people go hungry every year. In San Diego, that is one in seven who experience food insecurity, according to the San Diego Hunger Coalition

Here at USD, we are committed to the dignity and fullest development of the whole person. And we understand that food is powerful and personal. Food has the ability to foster community and to ground people to their faith and cultures. Food is medicine and can embody comfort, for those who are fortunate. And for those who are not, scarcity and insecurities around food can be detrimental to one’s health and well-being*. Innovations exist in this space and the aim of the Social Enterprise Foodfest is to celebrate local partners and innovators around food in San Diego and invite the USD community to the table. 

We will again be joined by partners like SoulMuch, Women Innovators Award, and Audience Choice Award winners from the 2019 Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge. At SoulMuch, healthy cookies are made partly from recycling unused quinoa and brown rice and turning it into flour. Efforts like theirs to reduce food waste is a noteworthy pathway to addressing climate change. Dojo Cafe will again join us and their commitment to strengthening the City Heights community is only one of the reasons we keep going back, another being that their brews are unbeatable. 

The event will also highlight USD centers and resources in this space as well, such as the USD Food Pantry and the End Food Waste Alliance, among others. Students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to stop by, grab a sample, and learn more about our neighborhood partners and USD resources. 

Join us Thursday, October 10, from noon - 2 p.m. in the Garden of the Sky to learn more about social innovations around food.
