Today, we are seeing new levels of violence sweeping the Middle East. In particular, Iraq has seen a resurgence in violence in recent years after a long period of fragile peace. With this increased level of insecurity and closing space for civil society organizations, we need to ensure women are able to drive forward their unique and vital peacebuilding work in Iraq.

In an effort to do so, the Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (Kroc IPJ) sent a proposal to the Jubitz Family Foundation requesting funding to help them expand their successful Women Waging Peace Action Community (WWPAC) program to the country. With the Jubitz Family Foundation’s commitment to community service and philanthropy, they hoped it would be a good match.

The Jubitz Family Foundation reflects a strong multi-generational commitment to community service and philanthropy. This commitment was exemplified by the founders’ father and grandfather, Monroe A. Jubitz, Sr. Al Jubitz continued his father’s tradition first at Dial-A-Truck and the Jubitz Corporation and now through the Jubitz Family Foundation with his children. The goal of the Jubitz Family Foundation is to sustain or exceed the level of community support that was established at the corporate level. The founders believe that thoughtful giving to outstanding organizations contribute significantly to stronger communities.

In my dual roles as Program Manager for the Jubitz Family Foundation’s peace grantmaking portfolio and the Executive Director of the Foundation’s War Prevention Initiative, I identified two key points in the current domestic and global socio-political context: (1) 'Business as usual' is not an option; (2) the role of women in peace and security is increasingly recognized and needs stronger support. The Iraq Women Waging Peace Action Community stood out as a promising practical initiative grounded in an outstanding academic institution and in a volatile post-war setting. A focus on women-led peacebuilding efforts is crucial not only because it includes 50% of the population that traditionally has been excluded, but because the outcomes are proven to be better and more sustainable. Beyond the expected impact on the Iraqi community, a nation that has suffered from US military interventions, we hope that projects like those will contribute more broadly in that they strengthen the recognition and role of women as peacebuilders.”

“The support from the Jubitz Family Foundation is enabling us to launch an exciting new initiative in one of the areas in the world where peace is most needed — Iraq. To be able to work with a supporter who so deeply believes and is ready to invest in ensuring women are a part of peace processes is phenomenal. Our world is stronger and better because of families like the Jubitzs. We can not thank them enough for believing in us, our work and the women we are partnering within Iraq.”

— Jennifer Bradshaw, Program Officer Women Peace and Security Programs
