SON PhD One of Four Alumni Selected as Torero Talks Speaker for Homecoming and Family Weekend

Dr. Deena Drake, PhD '19, MSN '13, was one of four USD alumni selected as a Torero Talks speaker during Homecoming and Family Weekend.  The theme this year is "Beyond the Limits” to reach success and opportunity.

Dr. Deena Drake

Dr. Drake works as a Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialist at Sharp Chula Vista.  Those who know her know she became a nurse not for personal success, but to help those in need of care.

"I spend most of my time in the emergency department and in ICU because that’s actually my nursing background and I am very comfortable there," Drake said. "I often would be with families meeting in the room so I could talk to them about what they’re seeing and answer any questions their loved one’s prognosis; if they come out of this illness, what would they be like."

She says her job working to bring families together at such a critical time has become more difficult with the pandemic. But she and her team have found a variety of ways to somehow keep patients and families together, even if it is not in-person.

Torero Talks will take place during Homecoming and Family Weekend.  The virtual discussion is scheduled for Thursday, October 14, 2020 at 12:30 pm.
