SAN DIEGO (August 4, 2022) ­­– University of San Diego (USD) School of Law alumnus Andrew Haden ‘08 (JD) was recently named the First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California. The First Assistant U.S. Attorney is the second-in-command at the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The First Assistant U.S. Attorney is selected by the sitting U.S. Attorney.

As the First Assistant U.S. Attorney, Haden will oversee the normal operation of the U.S. Attorney’s Office and will serve as a trusted advisor to the U.S. Attorney. The U.S. Attorney’s Office enforces federal criminal laws in the Southern District of California, which includes San Diego and Imperial counties, and represents the federal government in civil litigation.

Haden is a career federal prosecutor, joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office in 2010. During his nearly 12 years in the San Diego office, Haden worked in the General Crimes Section, as a Deputy Chief in both the Reactive and Major Crime Sections, as the Chief of the Violent Crimes & Human Trafficking Section, and as the Chief of the Criminal Division. Before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Haden served as a law clerk for U.S. District Judge Thomas J. Whelan in the Southern District of California.

Haden is a San Diego native and a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served as an Officer. In his five years in the Navy, Haden was sent on two overseas deployments.
