University of San Diego Announces C. Hugh Friedman Professorship Awarded to Dean Robert A. Schapiro

Professor C. Hugh Friedman

SAN DIEGO (July 13, 2021) – The University of San Diego announces that School of Law Dean Robert A. Schapiro has been awarded the newly established C. Hugh Friedman Professorship. The Professorship was created to honor the more than 40 years that Professor C. Hugh Friedman was a faculty member, teacher and mentor at USD School of Law, as well as his commitment to San Diego, his role in establishing the Dean’s Board of Visitors, and his reputation throughout the legal profession.  Professor Friedman was passionate about Corporate and Securities Law.

“Hugh was an extraordinary lawyer and legal expert, an author, a multitalented jazz musician, a public servant, a collector of minerals, stamps, netsuke, watches and more,” said his wife, Former Congresswoman Lynn Schenk, ’70 (JD).  “But his greatest sense of accomplishment and life satisfaction was being a law professor.  So, I know he would have been thrilled (and who knows, maybe is) to have a Professorship named for him!”

The School of Law is thankful for the generosity of the donors who have made the C. Hugh Friedman Professorship possible:

Lynn Schenk, ’70 (JD)

Adam Bass, ’91 (JD), ’88 (BA)

Ronald Beck, ’78 (JD)

David S. Casey, Jr., ’72 (JD)

Denise Hickey, ’94 (JD)

Cary Mack, ’88 (JD)

Virginia C. Nelson, ’79 (JD)

In addition, to recognize his longstanding connection with the Schenk Family, USD alumnus, Jonathan Asch, recently contributed to the growth of the newly established professorship honoring the life and work of Professor Friedman.  If you would like to support the C. Hugh Friedman Professorship, please contact Debbie Rider at or (619) 260-4692.
