SAN DIEGO (April 30, 2021) – University of San Diego (USD) School of Law alumna Brigadier General Kerry L. Muehlenbeck, ’98 (LLM), was recently appointed as Arizona’s Adjutant General and Director of the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs (DEMA) by Governor Doug Ducey. She is the first woman in Arizona history to hold the position and succeeds Major General Michael T. McGuire, who retired on April 10.

In announcing the post, Governor Ducey praised Muehlenbeck’s training and credentials. “General Muehlenbeck’s impressive military experience and continued leadership are amplified by her legal and teaching background...I look forward to working with General Muehlenbeck on protecting Arizonans, supporting our communities, and tackling the challenges ahead,” he said.

General Muehlenbeck received her commission by direct appointment in 1993, joined the Arizona Air National Guard in 1997 and has served in many roles, becoming Arizona’s Deputy Adjutant General in 2018. She is currently a professor at Mesa Community College where she teaches Administration of Justice Studies and serves as the Department Chair. She also taught at Arizona State University (ASU) for twelve years and was an adjunct professor at American Military University in West Virginia and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Prior to academia, General Muehlenbeck served as deputy county attorney at the Pima County Attorney’s Office, as an assistant prosecuting attorney for the Saginaw County Prosecutor’s Office and as Assistant Staff Judge Advocate at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. She holds a BS from Northwestern, a JD from Indiana School of Law, an LLM from USD and a PhD from ASU.
