Shawn Caine

SAN DIEGO (April 8, 2021) – University of San Diego (USD) alumnus Shawn E. Caine, ‘84 (BBA), ’87 (JD), was awarded with the California Lawyer Attorney of the Year (CLAY) award for his efforts in an insurance subrogation collaboration. Caine worked alongside other veteran litigators to recover $3.8 billion in settlements payable to insurance companies to compensate for payouts made for the Woolsey and Thomas fires.

Caine, along with Howard Maycon, Maura Walsh Ochoa, Waylon Pickett, and Craig Simon, has long been securing funds for insurance company clients from those who are responsible for causing wildfires. In 2007, the group began their working relationship to recover funds after a series of fires in San Diego County. Since then, the group has grown and was able to secure $2.2 billion from Southern California Edison for the Woolsey Fire and $1.6 billion for the Thomas Fire.

Caine owns his own firm, The Law Offices of Shawn E. Caine, where he specializes in wildfire land litigation, business and agriculture, and catastrophic loss. Caine is a co-host of the National Wildland Fire Conference and has spoken in a number of wildland fire conferences in both California and Texas. He earned both his Bachelor’s in Economics and his law degree from the University of San Diego.
