SAN DIEGO (April 2, 2021) – University of San Diego (USD) School of Law alumnus Hon. Robert Gerard, Jr., ’87 (JD), was featured in the April 2021 edition of Orange County Lawyer. The feature highlights Judge Gerard’s path to the bench and his many successes along the way.

Judge Gerard is the oldest of eight children and the son of an Army helicopter pilot. He spent much of his childhood moving around, having attended over fifteen schools between kindergarten and twelfth grade. Judge Gerard put himself through college at Monmouth University, where he doubled as a student athlete before graduating with a Bachelor’s in philosophy.

After graduation, Judge Gerard moved to San Clemente, California where he quickly became a lifeguard for the city. He went on to become a Police Officer for the City of Newport Beach and was soon encouraged to attend law school. Judge Gerard attended law school at USD and entered private practice soon after. He had a long and successful career in litigation, before his recent appointment to the bench. Judge Gerard was a longtime surf industry attorney and a founding partner of the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center (SHACC) in San Clemente.

Judge Gerard was appointed to the bench during the coronavirus pandemic, so he forewent the typical judicial training and was immediately assigned to criminal matters. At the start of 2021, Judge Gerard was reassigned to the Juvenile Dependency Court. Judge Gerard has adapted well to his new role and has served the community to the best of his ability.
