SAN DIEGO (November 6, 2020) – The University of San Diego (USD) School of Law National Trial Team recently competed in the virtual Buffalo-Niagara Mock Trial Competition and placed second out of 22 teams. Congratulations to USD teammates Allana Platt (3L), Kathryn Kellner (3L), Elmira Yousufi (3L), Brad Manering (3L) and coach Caitlin Ryan ('16) for besting nearly all teams in the six round/three-day competition, defeating top-ranked schools at the University of Pennsylvania and Washington University in St. Louis. The team’s competition prowess was praised by team directors from other law schools, with a nationwide multi-school mock trial email recently remarking that the USD team is off to a “fast start.”

USD National Trial Team Coach Francis DiGiacco praised the team for overcoming obstacles by training for rounds starting at 6 AM PST (since the competition was held on Eastern Standard Time) and nimbly handling practices used by other teams. “Our students gained a real insight into the ethical issues that can arise in advocacy, especially with a lawyer's duty of candor to the court, and how to handle those situations,” said Professor DiGiacco. “They displayed the poise and skill that you would expect from such talented and experienced advocates.”
