Tamala Choma ’97 (JD) Named Vice President and General Counsel of Valley Presbyterian Hospital

SAN DIEGO (October 12, 2020) – University of San Diego (USD) School of Law alumna Tamala Choma, ’97 (JD), was recently appointed as Vice President and General Counsel at Valley Presbyterian Hospital located in Van Nuys, California. She oversees all aspects of risk management, contract and policy management, and compliance as well as coordinating all legal and board governance matters within the facility. 

Choma has an extensive background providing high quality legal direction, strategy, counsel, and advice within healthcare organizations, and has served as legal counsel to senior executives across multiple lines of business on compliance with laws, regulations and accreditation over the past 20 years.

Choma has previously served as Senior Counsel for University of California (UC) Riverside’s Campus and Health Affairs, associate counsel at Genesis Health System in Iowa, associate counsel at Rady Children’s Hospital, corporate counsel for Sharp Healthcare, and senior counsel for Dignity Health. She also opened her own firm in 1997 and practiced intermittently until 2015.

Choma was once selected to participate in the Academic Medical Centers and Teaching Hospitals Practice Group Leadership Development Program for the American Health Lawyers Association. Choma holds a Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego School of Law, Master's of Science in Communicative Disorders from San Francisco State University, and a Bachelor’s of Arts in Communicative Disorders from San Diego State University. She also has clinical experience as a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist.
