Sharon Spivak ’95 (JD) Selected as San Diego Ethics Commission’s New Executive Director After Nationwide Search

Alumna Sharon Spivak

San Diego (September 21, 2020) – University of San Diego (USD) School of Law alumna and deputy city attorney Sharon Spivak, ‘95 (JD), was recently selected as the new executive director for the San Diego Ethics Commission after a nationwide search. The position oversees campaign and election laws in the city, something Spivak has focused on since leaving the private sector in 2006. Her experience as the deputy city attorney will prove useful since overseeing election law was one of her primary responsibilities, including the review of legislative proposals submitted by the San Diego Ethics Commission. Spivak will replace longtime director Stacey Fulhorst, who will retire in February after serving the commission for more than 17 years. Spivak will begin the transition period in November.

The San Diego Ethics Commission assesses fines to lobbyists, politicians, and others in the local political scene who break city campaign election laws and related regulations. The commission also recommends changes and updates to city laws based on revisions made to state or federal election laws and regulates new tactics that could be perceived as unethical or problematic.
