USD School of Law Alumni-Owned Andrew Geoffrey Vineyards Receives Highest Live Auction Bid at 2020 Virtual USD Wine Classic

SAN DIEGO (July 14, 2020) – Peter R. Thompson, ’80 (JD), owner, proprietor, and co-winemaker of Andrew Geoffrey Vineyards, 2020 USD Wine Classic: Virtual Coast from Coast to Coast live auction offering of an Exclusive In-Home Vertical Wine Dinner for Twelve earns the top spot with the highest bid of all live auction items at $3,300. Peter will serve as the onsite chef and wine sommelier for the evening as he presents a paired five-course wine dinner. The vertical wine tasting offers different vintages of Andrew Geoffrey Cabernet Sauvignons. The first-ever Virtual USD Wine Classic raised more than $80,000 supporting current-use scholarships for underrepresented students.

USD's Virtual Wine Classic offered guided tastings with winemakers, interactive games, silent and live auctions, opportunity drawings, live music, a digital program, and a virtual photo booth to more than 730 participants.

The name of the winery comes from the first names of Peter’s two sons, Andrew and Geoffrey. “Andrew, Geoff, and I were delighted to participate in the 2020 Virtual USD Wine Classic and not only thank the winning bidder for the Andrew Geoffrey Vertical Wine Dinner, but all the donors, participants, bidders, and organizers for making the event a resounding success,” said Peter. 

Andrew G. Thompson, ’16 (JD), is the older of winery owner Peter Thompson's two sons, and a fifth-generation lawyer in the Thompson family. Andrew works with the firm of Dunn, DeSantis, Walt & Kendrick, LLP, in La Jolla, practicing Corporate and Business law. Andrew is an important ambassador for Andrew Geoffrey Vineyards and is often onsite pouring AGV wines at the USD Wine Classic and School of Law school donor/leadership recognition events with commencement speakers and Maudsley Fellows Society members. Maudsley Fellows Society donors are committed to advancing access to legal education, enhancing legal scholarship, and expanding the law school’s national reach and reputation through annual gifts of $1,500 or more.

Geoffrey R. Thompson is the younger son of winery owner Peter Thompson. Geoff has had a passion for cooking since he was 12.  At 15, he began working on the line for Chef Michael Chiarello at Bottega Ristorante in Yountville and thereafter with Chef Nick Richie at Restaurant Alex in Rutherford.  Geoff attended and graduated from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park, New York, with his Bachelor of Science degree in Culinary Arts. While at the CIA, Geoff interned for Chef Frank Stitt at Bottega Cafe and Highlands Grill in Birmingham, Alabama. Geoff is now cooking for Executive Chef Paul Kahan and Chef de Cuisine Ryan Pfeiffer at Blackbird Restaurant in Chicago, Illinois. Geoff speaks kitchen Spanish and Italian, and aspires to become chef/owner of his own restaurant. Geoff is often the chef for Andrew Geoffrey Vineyards' private home dinners across the country.

Participants in the Virtual Wine Classic had the option of purchasing a USD Toast Box which included Peter’s Pulled Pork Tacos Recipe that accompanied a live cooking demonstration during the Wine Classic pre-show—advance to 8:40 in the recording of the live event to view the cooking demonstration. Both the Winery and Hospitality marketplaces are open through July 13.
