Shawn Burgh ’20 (JD) Interviewed About Recent Supreme Court LGBTQ Ruling

Alumnus Shawn Burgh

SAN DIEGO (June 23, 2020) – University of San Diego (USD) School of Law alumnus Shawn Burgh, ’20 (JD), was interviewed last week by NBC 7 San Diego about the recent Supreme Court ruling that protects LGBTQ employees from workplace discrimination. The ruling, authored by Justice Neil Gorsuch, references the 1964 Civil Rights Act that makes sexual discrimination illegal, confirming that the act now also applies to cases of gender and sexual orientation discrimination.

“It’s a human rights issue and it gives them the right to be human,” says Burgh. “It gives them the right to work and that’s the American dream.” Burgh, a recent USD law school graduate, works as a clerk for Gruenberg Law, a firm that specializes in employment law. Burgh has been a supporter of LGBTQ causes since studying at USD School of Law, where Burgh was the Social Chair of Pride Law and a member of the Tom Homann LGBT Law Association.
