SAN DIEGO (May 26, 2020) – University of San Diego (USD) School of Law Alumna and Adjunct Law Professor Virginia C. Nelson, ’79 (JD), was elected to the Board of Trustees of the University of San Diego on May 1, 2020. She has been a member of the USD School of Law Board of Visitors for 30 years. Previously, Nelson was a member of the Law Alumni Association Board of Directors. She was the 1990 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient and in 2011, received the Author E. Hughes Career Achievement Award. Nelson co-chaired the Leading Change Campaign for the School of Law, which raised more than $31.5 million to support the law school. She and her husband Mark Andrews have created several scholarships at the law school, including legacy endowed scholarships, the Virginia C. Nelson Graduation Prize in Advanced Advocacy, and the Julianne D. Fellmeth Scholar Program.

“USD is a place I treasure. I’m looking forward to a new level and breadth of service to this unique, remarkable institution,” said Nelson of her long association with the university.

For over 30 years, Professor Nelson headed her own litigation firm, specializing in medical negligence matters. In 1990, she was elected the youngest president of the San Diego County Bar Association.  She has been named to the Best Lawyers in America list since 1993 and repeatedly named one of the top 50 Women Litigators in California by the Los Angeles Daily Journal, as well as one of the Top 10 Southern California Super Lawyers – San Diego. She is the recipient of three Outstanding Trial Lawyer Awards and is the first female member of the San Diego Chapter of the American College of Trial Lawyers. She received a career achievement award from the San Diego County Bar Association in 2018 when they selected her as Outstanding Attorney. In 2019, Virginia Nelson was named “Cool Woman” by Girl Scouts San Diego.
