The Divisions prosecute nearly 23,000 criminal cases a year as well as civil enforcement of code violations. Before joining the City Attorney’s Office in 2002, Hemmerling was a San Diego police officer and attended law school at USD part-time. Prior to law enforcement, he was a decorated Marine commander with a reputation for his leadership and commitment.

Hemmerling retired from the Marines in 2014 after 27 years of service. He rose to the rank of Colonel, including active service in the Gulf War and the war in Iraq.
