Five USD School of Law Students Receive CEB Award for Excellence in Legal Research and Writing

SAN DIEGO (September 26, 2019) – Five University of San Diego (USD) School of Law students received a CEB® Award for Excellence in Legal Research and Writing. The award honors 1L students who demonstrate outstanding performance in a written brief. This year’s brief topic was a First Amendment issue of whether the government was endorsing religion. Congratulations to Alyson Hayden, first place award, Mikailia Hernandez, second place award, and finalists Strider Kachelein, Tiana Garbett and Daniel Rosen. The first and second place awardees received a financial stipend, and all students received a certificate acknowledging their outstanding briefs.

The CEB panel of judges included three USD School of law alumni, Kathyrn Kirschbaum, ’11 (JD), California Deputy Attorney General, James John Dalessio, ’90 (JD), Appellate Court Attorney, Fourth District Court of Appeal and Mary A. Lehman, ’91 (JD), Lehman Appeals.

CEB is a nonprofit program, founded by the University of California and the California State Bar to help returning World War II veterans return to the practice of law.  CEB continues its commitment to education, legal research and public service. CEB created this award program 12 years ago to recognize outstanding briefs written by first year students.  This is the first year USD School of Law students have been invited to participate.  A luncheon and ceremony were held on campus to honor the winners.
