Incoming Law Students Take Oath of Professionalism

San Diego (August 17, 2017) – “Congratulations on being here.  You have made it to law school!” Dean Stephen C. Ferruolo told  the incoming class of law students on Monday, the initial day of orientation. “This is not just your first day at USD School of Law; it is also your first day in the legal profession. That is why you will soon be asked to take the oath of professionalism.  As dean, I welcome you as our newest students.  As a lawyer, I welcome you as my newest professional colleagues.”

The Class of 2020 gathered at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice Theatre to verbally pledge their commitment to the legal profession. After welcoming the new students, Dean Ferruolo addressed the recent events in Charlottesville.

“What we saw in Charlottesville is not the kind of society any of us want to live in. We can debate about the causes and argue about the solutions, but all of us must unequivocally condemn racism and hatred in any form,” he said.

Dean Ferruolo then offered students practical advice and how to be successful in law school.

“Law school is not a race that can be won by a quick sprint at the end of each semester, but a marathon that requires steadiness and endurance,” Ferruolo said. “To finish the law school marathon successfully, you will need to stay the course. This requires discipline, but also keeping physically and mentally fit. Work hard, but steadily, and balance your hard work with rigorous play and fun. Here is where I especially commend you for choosing to come to law school in San Diego. Is there a better place to have fun, stay fit and healthy? This is the perfect climate for studying law!”
