Fall 2020 New Faculty Members and Promotions

Join us in welcoming our newest faculty members who joined USD's Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering in the fall of 2020.

The Computer Science department is pleased to announce Assistant Professor Jennifer Olsen, PhD as their newest tenure-track faculty member. She earned her PhD in Human-Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University in 2017 and has since been a postdoctoral fellow at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, in Switzerland. Dr. Olsen's area of specialization is human-computer interaction in learning and instruction.

The Industrial and Systems Engineering department is excited to welcome their newest tenure-track faculty member Assistant Professor Maryam Keshtzari, PhD. She earned her PhD in Industrial Engineering from Texas Tech University. Her research interests are applied operations research, simulation optimization and stochastic modeling. Dr. Teshtzari was awarded the Covenant Health and Social Services Graduate Fellowship in 2019–2020 in recognition of her contribution to the healthcare community in West Texas.

Ebrahim Tarshizi, PhD is a Professor of Practice and Program Director of the Applied Data Science program, which launched this Fall 2020. He received a PhD degree in Geo-Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno. He obtained an MSc in Data Science from Michigan Tech and an MBA from UNR College of Business. He earned a BSc in Exploration Engineering in Iran. Dr. Tarshizi also serves on the scientific advisory board for a healthcare technology startup company in San Diego, CA. 

Ramesh Rajagopalan, Ph is a Professor of Practice in Electrical Engineering and Program Director of the Masters in Applied Artificial Intelligence program, which also launched this Fall 2020. He earned a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University and was awarded the Graduate School Masters Prize and the all university Doctoral Prize at Syracuse University in recognition of his outstanding research and scholarship. 


Venkat Shastri, PhD was recently named Associate Dean of Graduate Programs. Dr. Shastri has been instrumental in the development of three new Masters programs at USD's Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering: MS in Applied Data Science (Fall 2020), MS in Applied Artificial Intelligence (Fall 2020) and MS in Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship (Fall 2021)

This year, the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering is also proud to announce the tenure and promotion of Jae Kim, PhD to Associate Professor within the Industrial and Systems Engineering department, and to announce the tenure and promotion of Daniel Codd, PhD to the rank of Associate Professor within the Mechanical Engineering department.
