From February 16–21, at least 22 USD students and faculty from the Department of Environmental and Ocean Sciences presented their work at the largest international ocean sciences research conference.

Ocean Sciences Meeting 2020, co-sponsored by the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO), and The Oceanography Society (TOS) was held at the San Diego Convention Center. Attendees learned about marine science disciplines, connected and developed communities, and advanced their scientific careers.

Undergraduates Elena Beckhaus, Maya Young, Tommy Drake, Rachel Sarner, Elizabeth Bushnell, Brennen Field, Chelsea Nelson, Annabel Gong, Samantha Douglass and Ilana Rivera Larrea as well as master's of science graduate students Grace Cawley, Caitlynn Birch, Gabriela Yamhure, Abby Bierzychudek, Riley Henning and Marisol Palomares presented posters and talks about their research. Furthermore, EOSC faculty Michel Boudrais, Jennifer Prairie, Nathalie Reyns, Steve Searcy, Christian Briseno-Avena and Drew Talley presented their research, innovative STEM educational approaches and lead sessions.

High school student collaborators — Hennessy Martinez from Mater Dei High and Barbara Hewitt and Garavous Kouekabakilaho from Hoover High — did an excellent job. Faculty and students enjoyed connecting with many EOSC alumni!

Students benefited from the opportunity to connect with ocean scientists from around the world.

“It was really amazing to be surrounded by scientists whose literature I’ve read,” said MS student Grace Cawley.

“It was a great opportunity to meet possible PhD advisors and to learn about all the work that is ongoing in my study field,” added Gabriela Yamhure.

We are extremely proud of how EOSC was represented at the conference. Congratulations to all of our attendees!
