University of San Diego Welcomes Newest Toreros for Fall Semester

New Student Convocation

The University of San Diego has opened its doors to a new academic year, welcoming about 1,300 first-year students as part of its 2025–26 class. In total, roughly 2,600 students moved into residence halls this weekend, marking the start of a lively semester at Alcalá Park.

This incoming class is among the most accomplished in USD’s history. Students boast an average GPA of 4.02, with more than half identifying as students of color, including 34% who are Hispanic. One in four are the first in their families to attend college, and over a third speak a language other than English. The group also represents 40 states, 23 countries, and three U.S. territories, with 16 different faith traditions represented.

“There’s nothing quite like the energy of a new academic year,” said USD President James T. Harris III, DEd. “We’re thrilled to welcome such a bright, passionate and dynamic group of students to our campus. Each new class brings fresh perspectives and ideas that strengthen our community and move us closer to fulfilling our mission of creating a more inclusive, sustainable and hopeful world.”

Sustainability is taking center stage this fall with the launch of Torero Thrift, a student-led program that recycles and redistributes donated dorm items like mini-fridges, lamps, and clothing. Developed after research into campus waste and donation needs, the initiative helps students furnish rooms at no cost while advancing USD’s zero-waste goals.
