Celebrating the Graduating Class of 2025: Alexa Osorio

The University of San Diego would like to congratulate all of our wonderful students who are graduating this year. We will be spotlighting students from across campus, sharing their educational journeys leading up to commencement.

As graduation approaches, Alexa Osorio, a Knauss School of Business student majoring in international business and finance, is taking a moment to look back on everything that has shaped her over the past four years, from her bilingual upbringing to her experiences on campus and across the border.

Osorio grew up in a Spanish-speaking home here in San Diego with roots in both Mexico City and Cuba. That cultural mix, she says, gave her a unique perspective from an early age.

“Being able to travel to Mexico City every summer to visit family and being able to experience a different culture has made me aware of the differences,” she said. “ I think being raised in those two different environments has allowed me to appreciate the differences.”

That appreciation inspired her to major in international business. At USD, she found a lot of opportunities to put her bilingual skills to use, especially through the Student International Business Council, where she worked on real consulting projects with Spanish-speaking clients.

“It's been really awesome to be able to use those abilities and take what I'm learning in the classroom and apply them to real world projects,” she said.

Osorio also got involved in University Ministry and took on a leadership role with the Tijuana day trips. A few times each semester, she and a small group of students would drive across the border to deliver food to families and spend time with the local community.

Now, with graduation around the corner, it’s a mix of emotions.

“It’s really bittersweet,” she said. “I feel like it was just yesterday that I was touring the campus and now it’s all coming together. USD has really been my home for the past four years. And I really felt that through the different communities that I've been a part of.”

Alexa Osorio, estudiante de la Escuela de Negocios Knauss, está a punto de obtener su licenciatura en negocios internacionales y finanzas. A medida que se acerca su graduación, reflexiona sobre todo lo que la ha formado durante los últimos cuatro años, desde su crianza bilingüe hasta sus experiencias en el campus y al otro lado de la frontera.

Osorio creció en un hogar de habla hispana aquí en San Diego, con raíces tanto en la Ciudad de México como en Cuba. Esa mezcla cultural, dice, le dio una perspectiva única desde muy joven.

“Cada verano visitamos a la familia en la Ciudad de México, y realmente me abrió los ojos", contó. “Me ayudó a apreciar las diferencias entre culturas y a aprender cómo tomar lo mejor de cada una.”

Esa apreciación la inspiró a estudiar negocios internacionales. En la Universidad de San Diego, encontró muchas oportunidades para poner en práctica sus habilidades bilingües, especialmente a través del Consejo Estudiantil de Negocios Internacionales, donde trabajó en proyectos reales de consultoría con clientes hispanohablantes.

“Ha sido muy emocionante poder aplicar lo que aprendí en clase a situaciones reales,” dijo.

Osorio también se involucró en el Ministerio Universitario y asumió un rol de liderazgo en los viajes a la frontera con Tijuana que el organismo solía organizar. Varias veces por semestre, ella y un pequeño grupo de estudiantes cruzaban la frontera para entregar alimentos a familias y convivir con la comunidad local.

Ahora, con la graduación a la vuelta de la esquina, siente una mezcla de emociones.

“Es un sentimiento agridulce,” dijo. “Siento que fue ayer cuando vine a conocer el campus, y ahora todo está tomando forma. Las personas que conocí, las organizaciones en las que participé… todo hizo que USD se sintiera como un hogar.”
