USD's Online Orientation Course Significantly Boosts Student Success
A new case study published by a University of San Diego staff member in the International Journal of Designs for Learning highlights how the university has significantly improved online student preparedness and retention through an orientation course.
The article, titled "Onboarding Students at Scale: A New Student Orientation Course That Prepares Students to Succeed in Their Online Degree Programs," details the design and implementation of a comprehensive online orientation course developed by the Learning Design Center for USD Online that equips students with essential skills and knowledge before beginning their graduate programs.
Key highlights:
- The asynchronous course introduces students to online learning tools, academic expectations and success strategies.
- It includes interactive modules on time management, technological preparedness, and academic writing.
- Students engage in peer learning activities to build connections before classes begin.
- Completion of the orientation is now the strongest predictor of student retention and academic success.
"This orientation course has enhanced the onboarding experience for our online students," said Heather Leslie, Instructional Designer at USD's Learning Design Center and author of the article. "By preparing students in advance, we've seen significant improvements in their readiness and likelihood of success in their programs."
The case study provides a detailed overview of the course structure, implementation process, and outcomes, offering valuable insights for other institutions looking to improve their online student onboarding practices.
The orientation course received an Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning from the United States Distance Learning Association in July 2022.
