SOLES Celebrates Native American Heritage Month: May Harris '10 (MA)

To honor Native American History Month, May Harris '10 provides her thoughts on this national month of recognition. May received her JD from USD's School of Law in 2000 and she received her Master's in Nonprofit Leadership and Management from SOLES in 2010. She is also currently teaching in the NPLM program.

What Tribal Nation are you a part of?
Potowatomi; Member of the Loon Clan
 
Why do you feel it's important to recognize Native American Heritage Month?
Without active recognition by all, our collective memories are not enough to sustain our culture into the future.
 
How do you honor American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month?
I wish I could honor it more; currently, any acknowledgement and celebration has been really limited to close family.
 
Who is someone of Native American heritage that inspires you?
Deb Haaland; The first Native American to serve as a US Cabinet Member.
 
What do you hope is accomplished during the month of celebration and recognition? 
I hope that a greater awareness of the impact and legacy of those with Native heritage bring to our communities is built through this month of celebration and recognition.
