Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Jared Ruga '11 teaches storytelling as effective communicationEnglish alumna Chelsea McLin '17 has opened a small pop-up and online book shop called Jubilee Books. Learn more about this alumni-owned business when she gives a free Zoom talk on Dec. 17.

Communication is always key. It matters in everyday life with family, friends, at work and to understand the world as we know it. And in today’s world, with conversations happening more and more by email, cell phones, Zoom and other devices, communication can get lost in translation.

Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Jared Ruga ’11 is doing something about it. Today, December 10 from 5-6 p.m. on Zoom, Ruga will discuss the topic, “Storytelling Success: Win Projects, Influence Your Boss and Motivate Your Team.” Ruga will show you how some tools of the storytelling trade translate to facilitating more effective communication at work and home.

This is an interactive workshop that will teach you how to cast yourself as the protagonist of your own life, leveraging millennia-old story hacks that tap deep into the human psyche and make you heard. The same story elements that make a good movie can help you make better moves in your career, relationships, and beyond.

This free event is hosted by the USD Los Angeles Torero Club. While it is free to join in, an RSVP is required. To do so, click here.

Graduate School Finals, Dec. 14-18; Special Session Ends Dec. 18

The final day of fall semester classes for most graduate students is this Friday, December 11. Final exams will take place Dec. 14-18. With a few August exceptions, most graduate programs started the fall semester on Sept. 2. We wish everyone best wishes on their final exams, final reports and final project/presentations.

Due to the earlier than normal fall semester start for undergraduates, law school students and a few graduate programs, the university instituted a Special Session, which enabled students to take a course between Nov. 30 and Dec. 18. These enrolled students will also complete their studies by Dec. 18 and we wish them success with their finals. The regular Intersession session starts on Jan. 4, 2021.
