International Education Week (Nov. 16-20) to be Celebrated Virtually, on Social Media

Traveling to international destinations may be impossible at this time, but it’s still virtually possible to learn about all things international. That’s what the University of San Diego’s International Center seeks to do from Nov. 16-20 for International Education Week (IEW).

The IEW, a national event, is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State to recognize the global exchange environment between the United States and other countries.

For several years, USD has taken this spotlight opportunity to enhance campus community learning about all things international that the university offers.

This year, 2020, however, has changed the way IEW will be presented. Instead of in-person events and programs, social media platforms for the Office of International Students and Scholars — Instagram @usdoiss, and OISS Facebook page — will be the destination for several spotlights, such as International Trivia (Monday on Instagram), International Alumni Spotlight (Tuesday, Instagram and Facebook), International Photo Contest (Wednesday, Instagram), International Bingo (Thursday, Instagram), and a Flashback Friday Photo Edition (Friday, Instagram and Facebook).

Monday, Nov. 16, 4-5 p.m.: SOLES Career Development Workshop: Leveraging Your Graduate Global Studies. Meeting ID: 990 4269 5988 — Join the SOLES Global Center for a workshop on leveraging your global studies trip. This workshop will include tips for your resume and cover letter, as well as talking points for interviews.

Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1-2 p.m.: Study Abroad 101, Register Here. — Interested in studying abroad but don't know where to start? Join this informative session to learn more about the available programs and the application process. NOTE: This program is for undergraduate students.

Tuesday, Nov. 17, 4-5 p.m.: SOLES Graduate Global Studies and Black Student Experiences. Meeting ID: 971 8025 7077. Join SOLES Global Center for a panel presentation and community chat with Novien Yarber (Leadership Studies MA '18 & PhD '22), Amanda Gunn (School Counseling MA '21), and Rhonda Harley (Leadership Studies PhD '21).

Thursday, Nov. 19, 2-3 p.m.: COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) Faculty Presentation and 2020 International Impact Award. Register Here. — Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) or “Virtual Exchange” is a new and creative way to internationalize your course while engaging students. COIL provides opportunities to integrate global perspectives into your course by linking with a faculty member and their students, from one of USD's many international partner universities. With COIL you can develop a collaborative project that your students do together using online tools. This activity then becomes one aspect of your course, supporting learning goals and giving your students a chance to explore global perspectives on a topic, case, or project. Come to this interactive session, led by faculty who incorporated COIL projects in their Fall 2020 courses and learn how to do this for Spring 2021.
