Virtual Research Week at USD, April 20-24

The spring semester at the University of San Diego routinely showcases many big institutional events on campus. This spring, however, due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic and a complete move to online education instruction, many events are moving to a virtual presentation.

One of the bigger annual April events, Research Week, will take place April 20-24. Although the schedule has been modified, there are several events that will take place in a virtual format.

Run by the Office of Sponsored Programs with partners such as the Provost’s Office and the Office of Undergraduate Research, highlights for this year’s programming includes the 30th annual Creative Collaborations Undergraduate Research Conference (April 21-23), the School of Leadership and Education Sciences’ Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice Showcase (April 22, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.), recognition of outstanding undergraduate research mentor award winners (April 24).

My Story-Connected (Virtual) Event April 21

One of the top student-attended events on the USD campus the last few years has been the ongoing My Story series.

A concept created in 2014 by then USD student and now 2017 alumna Charlotte Vitak, My Story at USD is billed "as a night of storytelling and empathy that features members of the USD community and allows audience members to 'shut up and listen.'"

Vitak came up with the idea as a sophomore who wanted to explore ways to build a more inclusive community. This concept brought together students from across campus to share the critical moments and experiences that led them to become who they are now.

On Tuesday, April 21, My Story and an organization with a similar approach, We Talk Real Talk, will co-host a Zoom virtual event called Enlace: A Storytelling Event for Connecting Humans. The event, taking place in Denver, runs from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Pacific (5:30 p.m. locally in Denver).

As described by the two entities, they've come together to build a storytelling event that invited connection and conversation. True stories from four individuals who were selected from the Enlace application process and were trained by a storytelling coach. Following their talks, a conversation will be facilitated amongst the audience to connect with each other in an authentic and honest way.

To enter and participate, registration is required. Tickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested $10 donation. A portion of ticket sales will go to the Colorado Crisis Center. The USD Changemaker Hub has sponsored a number of tickets for USD students to participate in the virtual event.
