Athletics Roundup: Big Weekend of Success for Baseball; Softball, M&W Tennis, Men's Rowing

Caleb Ricketts had a big weekend offensively for the USD baseball team.Sophomore right-hander Jake Miller is congratulated by teammates after tossing USD baseball's first no-hitter since 2008. Miller struck out 10 in a 7-0 win over Monmouth on Feb. 28.

A three-day series weekend that produced a sweep of Monmouth University in exciting fashion — Torero sophomore righthanded pitcher, Jake Miller, tossed a no-hitter Friday, complete with an ESPN Sports Center Top 10 highlight defense to preserve it; a come-from-behind win on Saturday and then an offensive explosion Sunday — was the perfect way for the USD baseball team, now 9-2 to start the season, to finish February and start March at Fowler Park.

Miller (1-0) threw the first no-hitter for the Toreros since 2008, to lead the Toreros over Monmouth, 7-0, on Feb. 28. He struck out 10 and walked two. He had a perfect game through seven innings. It was the first no-hitter for San Diego since Josh Romanski did it on March 24, 2008 against Harvard. Thomas Luevano led the way offensively for the Toreros, going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Caleb Ricketts and Will Worthington each had a two-run triple. Miller was helped by outstanding defensive plays, including back-to-back diving catches in the eighth inning by left fielder Tora Otsuka and center fielder Camden Vasquez.

On Saturday, USD rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the eighth inning to win 4-3 in the 10th inning. The Toreros were led by Ricketts, who went 3-for-5 on the day with two RBI, including a single to score Adam Kerner for the game-winning play. Shane McGuire had a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth. Conner Thurman (4-0) got the win out of the bullpen.

On Sunday, San Diego collected 17 hits, including eight doubles in a 11-7 victory. Ricketts went 5-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Max Jung Goldberg and Luevano each had three hits. Freshman Carter Rustad (3-0) turned in another impressive performance on the mound for the Toreros. The right-hander went five shutout innings without giving up a hit, and allowing one walk and striking out three. Thurman recorded his first save of the season.

Baseball Schedule: USD at Indiana State, Tuesday, noon (PT), Terre Haute, Ind.; USD at Indiana, Friday-Sunday: 1 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m./2 p.m. (DH) Saturday, 9 a.m. Sunday, Bloomington, Ind.

Softball

The USD softball team's week began with a Feb. 24 doubleheader sweep by visiting Utah with the opener going nine innings in a 6-4 defeat, followed by an 8-0, six-inning game.

From there, the softball program hosted its first USD Tournament of the season last weekend and came away with a 3-3 record. The Toreros lost to Long Beach State 4-2, then won both of their games Friday, a 3-1 triumph over St. John's and a 6-2 decision against Brown. Playing only one game on Saturday, USD fell 3-2 to North Dakota. On Sunday, the last day of the tournament, USD defeated Mount Saint Mary's 6-1 before a 4-0 setback against UCLA, the No. 1-ranked team in the nation.

Against Long Beach State, a three-run fourth inning was enough to top USD, despite getting a run in the fifth and sixth inning. USD stranded 10 runners on base. Friday's two wins against St. John's and Brown featured a complete-game pitching performance from Delaney Heller and Madison Earnshaw, respectively. USD had 10 hits against North Dakota, including three each from Madison Casiano and Sara Silveyra, in the 3-2 loss. The Sunday split saw freshman pitcher Courtney Rose pick up her second win of the season in a triumph against Mt. Saint Mary's. Heller went the distance in a game with UCLA, which was ranked first in the current NCAA poll.

San Diego (10-11) will host another USD tournament for the second straight week at the Softball Complex.

Softball Schedule: USD hosts tournament, Thursday-Sunday: USD vs. Villanova, Thursday, 1:30 p.m., USD vs. Mount St. Mary's, Thursday, 4 p.m.; USD vs. Mt. Women's Tennis

The women's tennis team extended its win streak to five on Feb. 28 with a 4-3 nonconference home win over Pac 12 Conference school Washington State, only to have the streak snapped on March 1 in a 4-3 home loss to UC Santa Barbara.

Against Washington State, Elizabeth Goldsmith rallied after losing the first set of her singles match to win and clinch the match for the Toreros over the 43rd-ranked Cougars. USD won the doubles point on wins by the teams of Goldsmith-Kati Kukaras and Solymar Colling-Helena Francati. Washington State won the first two singles matches for a 2-1 lead, but Gemma Garcia won to tie it. The Cougars took a 3-2 lead, but Francati's win at No. 5 singles set up Goldsmith's big win at the No. 6 singles position.

A four-hour match between USD and UCSB took place on Sunday. UCSB won the doubles point. USD's three points came on singles wins by Goldsmith, Colling and Francati. Goldsmith's win evened the score 1-1 and Colling and Francati's wins gave USD a 3-2 lead before the Gauchos won the last two matches for the triumph.
