SAN DIEGO (February 18, 2020) – University of San Diego (USD) School of Law Alumnus John C. Hemmerling, ‘01 (JD), was recently featured in The San Diego Union-Tribune segment “People San Diego Should Know.” People San Diego Should Know is a weekly column about local people who are noteworthy because of their experiences, achievements, creativity or credentials.
The piece highlights Hemmerling’s path to joining the San Diego City Attorney’s Office where he oversees eight Criminal and Community Justice Divisions with nearly 200 attorneys and staff. The Divisions prosecute nearly 23,000 criminal cases a year as well as civil enforcement of code violations. Before joining the City Attorney’s Office in 2002, Hemmerling was a San Diego police officer and attended law school at USD part-time. Prior to law enforcement, he was a decorated Marine commander with a reputation for his leadership and commitment.
Hemmerling retired from the Marines in 2014 after 27 years of service. He rose to the rank of Colonel, including active service in the Gulf War and the war in Iraq. Hemmerling’s affinity for leading from the front during his service earned him many commendations including a Bronze Star and promotion to colonel. Now, Hemmerling leads a team of lawyers and support staff in protecting our community in the courtroom. He aims to hold people accountable and help lawbreakers change direction while keeping San Diego safe.
