Black History Month: February Celebratory Events at USD

February is Black History Month and several activities to recognize and celebrate it are planned at the University of San Diego courtesy of the Black Student Resource Commons (BSRC), Black Student Union (BSU) and affiliated organizations across campus.

Monday, Feb. 3: BSRC and BSU present — Black History Month Kickoff Mixer, 7-8:30 p.m., La Gran Terraza Patio.

Tuesdays in February (Feb. 4, 11, 18, 25): University Ministry and BSRC present — Black History Month’s Faith and Justice Film Fest “When They See Us,” 4-6 p.m., Ministry Center (next to Founders Chapel). There are four episodes to watch over the course of four weeks and there will be a panel discussion after each episode.

Thursday, Feb. 6: FUBU — The Black Tax, with King and Mar, 12:30-1:30 p.m., Student Life Pavilion 412.

Thursday, Feb. 6: San Diego Urban League of Young Professionals present — Education and Outreach, 4-6 p.m., SLP 412.

Monday, Feb. 10: BSRC and BSU Weekly Meeting, 7-8:30 p.m., SLP 301.

Tuesday, Feb. 11: BSRC, LGBQIA-Allies Commons and LGBTQIA GSA present — Let’s Have a Kiki discussion about Black Queeroes, 12:30-2 p.m., SLP 424.

Tuesday, Feb. 11: National Society of Black Engineers present — Resume review, 2-4 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 14: BSRC and Womxn’s Commons present — Nothing but Feminism “Black Self Love,” 12:30-2 p.m., SLP 420.

Friday, Feb. 14: BSRC presents — Movie Night: “The Photograph,” 6-9 p.m., AMC Fashion Valley 18 Theatres in Mission Valley.

Saturday, Feb. 15: NSBE and USD Bull Pit Men’s Basketball Tailgate (USD hosts BYU), 5:30-9:30 p.m., Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Wednesday, Feb. 19: USD’s BSRC, San Diego State’s BRC and UC San Diego’s BRC present — Black Skate Night, 9-11 p.m., at Linda Vista’s Skate World.

Thursday, Feb. 20: A panel with USD professors Channon Miller and Cory Gooding to discuss Michele Norris' book, "The Grace of Silence." 6:30 - 8 p.m. at the San Diego Central Library. RSVP at

Monday, Feb. 24: USD’s Copley Library presents — “Eavesdropping on America’s Conversation on Race” is the event title with NPR’s Michele Norris discussing “The Race Card Project,” and how six-word snapshots paint a vivid picture of America’s attitudes and experiences about race during a fascinating moment in American history. This event is from 7-9 p.m. in the Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice Theatre. Event is free and open to the public. Register at

Tuesday, Feb. 25: BSRC and Torero Program Board present — Afri Dia Fest, 12:30-2 p.m., Paseo de Colachis.

Wednesday, Feb. 26: BSRC and the USD Alumni Association present — Black Alumni Mixer, 7-9 p.m., O’Tooles (connected to La Gran Terraza).

Thursday, Feb. 27: The Commons presents — Collective Conversations, the Black History Month edition, 12:30-2 p.m., SLP 418 (United Front Multicultural Center).

Thursday, Feb. 27: The USD Theatre Department presents — Play reading of “Strange Fruit,” 6 p.m., Black Box Theatre (Camino Hall 131).
