Learning Commons Topping Out Ceremony — Dec. 19

Topping Out Ceremony for Learning Commons on Dec. 19

The Learning Commons, a new building currently under construction behind Copley Library, is coming along nicely. Want to see the progress? At 3:30 pm. on Thursday, Dec. 19, there will be a Topping Out ceremony at the Learning Commons jobsite.

In addition to seeing this happen, all attendees will have an opportunity to sign a piece of structural steel that will be lifted by crane and permanently affixed to the building. All are welcome to attend and no RSVP is required.

One of the exciting parts of the University of San Diego’s Renaissance Plan, the Learning Commons will be a new mixed-use educational facility located on the lawn area north of Copley Library and west of Camino Hall. Design features will include 24-hour study space, a minimum of 12 classrooms with seating for 25 to 40 people, lecture classroom with a 100-person capacity, coffee/snack service, and outdoor space. The building will be designed and constructed to LEED silver standards, all while maintaining the existing Spanish Renaissance style. The goal for this space is to stimulate collaboration and social interaction in an effort to maximize the educational experience. Construction, which started this past summer, is expected to be completed in 2020.
