Torero Tidbits: Bryant Strikes Out, Plays LF in MLB All-Star Game; Men's Soccer Golf Tourney; Summer Camps

Kris Bryant in MLB All-Star GameChicago Cubs infielder-outfielder Kris Bryant, who starred for USD baseball from 2011-13, played in left field for two innings and struck out in his lone at-bat during Tuesday's MLB All-Star Game.

Chicago Cubs infielder-outfielder Kris Bryant, a University of San Diego baseball standout from 2011-13, played in the 90th annual Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Cleveland on Tuesday night. The American League’s best topped the National League, 4-3, at Progressive Field to secure the former's seventh straight win in this series.

Bryant, who made the National League all-star roster as a reserve, wound up playing in left field in the fourth and fifth innings. His one defensive moment came in the fifth inning when New York Yankees’ Gary Sanchez doubled to left field in the fifth. Sanchez eventually came around to score and make it a 2-0 American League lead.

Bryant struck out in a seven-pitch at-bat for his lone plate appearance to lead off the sixth inning against Oakland A’s pitcher Liam Hendriks. Bryant was ahead in the count 2-0 and 3-1 before he fouled off two pitches and then struck out on a called third strike.

The at-bat and result mean Bryant is now 1 for 4 with a walk, home run, two strikeouts and a fly out in five plate appearances and three MLB All-Star Games (2015, 2016, 2019).

Despite the loss, Bryant and his fellow Cub All-Star teammates, Willson Contreras and Javier Baez, returned to Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians. In 2016, the Cubs defeated the Indians in the World Series in seven games. The deciding Game 7 was at Progressive Field and Bryant’s throw to first base recorded the final out of the series and earned the Cubs their first World Series title since 1908.

The Cubs will now resume the second half of the 2019 season with a nine-game homestand starting Friday against Pittsburgh. Bryant ended the first half of this season with a .297 batting average, 17 home runs and 44 runs batted in for the Cubs, whose 47-43 record is good for first place in the NL Central Division. The Cubs hold a slim half-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Bryant was an All-American at USD, winning the Golden Spikes Award, NCAA Division I Player of the Year Award and Dick Howser Trophy in 2013. He hit a USD single-season record 31 home runs that year — which led the nation — to finish with a USD career-high 54 homers in three seasons. He is also USD’s all-time leader in runs scored (196) and slugging percentage (.702).
