The University of San Diego’s 17 fraternities and sororities are always among the most socially active organizations on campus, but this week, which happens to be the annual Greek Week festivities, students have taken their efforts to a whole other level.

Each Greek Week is especially vibrant because throughout the week everyone in this community seeks to raise funds for one specific and worthwhile organization or cause. Each year is different. This year, according to Mia Westphal, vice president of philanthropy for the USD Panhellenic Council, the 2019 Greek Week events are dedicated to raise funds for the nonprofit organization, Firefighter Aid.

The organization’s mission is “to provide charitable assistance to firefighters and families in crisis and to promote awareness of firefighter health and safety issues and the impacts they have upon their families and communities.”

Westphal said it is an honor to support this organization. “Every year members of each sorority and fraternity chapter on campus are so excited to come together to support one another and the philanthropy of our choosing. Firefighter Aid is a local foundation that supports firefighter families in need. We are so thankful for all that they do for the San Diego area.”

Through the collaborative efforts of both Panhellenic and the Interfraternity councils and all students who belong to one of the 17 USD-affiliated chapters, daily events during Greek Week will offer support to Firefighter Aid.

The week’s first fundraising event, taking place today, March 25, until 11 p.m., is at the Baked Bear dessert shop location in Pacific Beach. Westphal said that any USD community member who shows a digital or print copy of the special flyer made for this event and makes a purchase, Baked Bear will give 20 percent of the proceeds straight to Firefighter Aid.

The USD Fraternity and Sorority Life have created a Facebook donation page specifically for Firefighter Aid during USD’s Greek Week. All donation amounts are welcomed, Westphal said.

“All the money we collect throughout the week is donated directly to the foundation and we have had great success in previous years,” she said.

In addition to the support for Firefighter Aid, USD’s Greek Week is also a chance for some spirited competition between the student organizations.

“Greek Week is a great way to get to know other peers in various chapters, have fun, and support our community both on and off campus,” Westphal said. “Fraternities and sororities are paired together to create a team that then participates in events.”
