Virginia C. Nelson ’79 (JD) Named One of Girl Scouts San Diego’s Cool Women of 2019

SAN DIEGO (January 10, 2019) – University of San Diego (USD) School of Law Alumna Virginia C. Nelson, ’79 (JD), was honored by Girl Scouts San Diego as one of their Cool Women of 2019. The objective of the Girl Scouts San Diego’s Cool Women program is to honor cool women and invest in emerging leaders.

As a trial attorney, Virginia C. Nelson headed her own litigation firm, specializing in medical negligence cases for over 30 years. She is a former President of the San Diego County Bar Association, San Diego Inn of Court and the Enright American Inn of Court. Nelson is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. She has been listed in Best Lawyers of America for 24 years, was selected America's Finest City Legal Professional of the Year as well as a Top Ten Southern California-San Diego Super Lawyer 2007-2017.

She has also received the Bernard Witkin Award for excellence in the teaching, practice, enactment and adjudication of the law and the Daniel T. Broderick III Award for civility, integrity, and professionalism. In 1990, she received the USD School of Law Distinguished Alumni Award and in 2011, she was selected as the Author E. Hughes Career Achievement Award recipient for the School of Law. Now, as an Adjunct Professor at the USD School of Law, she teaches the Civil Practicum, Negotiation, California Civil Discovery Practice and the Experiential Advocacy Practicum.

Nelson has served on the Board of Visitors at USD School of Law since 1990. In 2006, she created a Graduation Prize given to the top student in the Advanced Advocacy class at USD School of Law. In 2017, she created the Julianne D. Fellmeth Public Interest Law Scholar Scholarship.
