Enjoy the End-of-Semester USD Music Department Concert Series

USD Choral ScholarsThe USD Gamelan Ensemble will perform tonight, May 7, in Shiley Theatre. So, too, will the USD Mariachi Ensemble. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.

A traditional time of the year is upon us all when the academic semester is quickly coming to a close at the University of San Diego. It is also a wonderful time to discover and take in a variety of music performances by our talented USD students, faculty and staff.

Today, Monday, May 7, and continuing through May 14, the USD Music Department will showcase an array of student performances. The series kicked off May 3 with the Chamber Music and USD Strings show. All performances take place on the USD campus.

The schedule is as follows:

May 7: Gamelan and Mariachi Ensembles, 7:30 p.m., Shiley Theatre.

This concert features the Gamelan Ensemble, which will perform the music of Bali, Indonesia, as well as the Mariachi Ensemble. David Harnish directs the Gameland Ensemble and Serafin Paredes leads the Mariachi Ensemble. It's likely that both performances will include dance. Tickets: $10 general admission, $8 seniors, USD faculty, staff and alumni, $5 for students with a valid ID card.

May 8: Wind Ensemble, 7:30 p.m., Shiley Theatre.

The Wind Ensemble will close their season with "Melodious Thunk," music that's likely to get one in the groove of summer. Tickets: This is a free concert. All are welcome.

May 9: Jazz Ensemble, 7:30 p.m., Shiley Theatre.

The Jazz Ensemble presents its end-of-the-semester concert. The ensemble consists of vocalists, saxophonists and guitarists over a rhythm section of piano, bass and drums. The concert selections will be a mix of old and new jazz standards with swing, bossa and funky grooves. Tickets: $10 general admission, $8 seniors, USD faculty, staff and alumni, $5 for students with a valid ID card.

May 10: Student Recital I, 12:30 p.m., Shiley Theatre.

Voice students at USD will present selections from their semester work. Tickets: This is a free concert. All are welcome.

May 11: USD Choral Ensembles Present Carmina Burana, 7:30 p.m., Shiley Theatre.

The USD Choral Ensembles join together to perform Carl Orff's rambunctious cantata, Carmina Burana. Accompanied by a chamber ensemble of two pianos and six percussionists, this masterwork depicts medieval revelry, the ups and downs of fortune's favor and the many pleasures found in life. Tickets: This is a free concert. All are welcome.

May 14: Electronic Music Recital, 5 p.m., Shiley Theatre.

Adventurous new electronic sounds from the composers who work in USD's Digital Audio Studio space. Tickets: This is a free concert. All are welcome.
